Brown mallee, like many of the Australian eucalyptus trees, comes in burr format with amazing colours.  It is difficult to turn as it comes off in little bits rather than peeling, and it blunts the tool quickly.  However, it's welll worth persevering as on this piece.  The key design factor with this sort of design is that the bowl must seem to flow smoothly through the wings. The surface is finished with carnauba wax, which is non-toxic, so it could be used for nuts, crisps etc and can be passed around by holding the wings.
